  • YAPHANK — Sen. Charles Schumer is pushing for federal money to upgrade five Long Island emergency communications radio towers against Superstorm Sandy-like high winds and flooding.
Schumer and Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone were announcing a major push Monday for the funds. Suffolk has applied for the money.
Schumer says approximately $700,000 would make towers more weather-resistant in Hauppauge (HAW’-pawgh), Suffolk Hills, Coram Hill, Mount Misery and Yaphank.
Communications problems slowed emergency response times during and after Sandy in October 2012.
Schumer says first responders had trouble because parts of the radio infrastructure were damaged or had become outdated.
