  • ILION, N.Y. — The Central Valley Academy Thunder led by one point at halftime Thursday and trailed by one before Cooperstown made a run in the final four minutes and won 56-48.
The victory was the season-high third in a tow for Section III’s reigning Class C-1 champions. The Hawkeyes (6-3) had beaten the Thunder by 30 points at home in their season-opener.
Liz Millea had two baskets during a 6-0 Cooperstown run at the start of the second half and the Hawkeyes never trailed after that. Central Valley Academy’s Miranda Maldonado tied the game at 36 with a three-pointer midway through the third quarter by Cooperstown’s Maggie Hall countered with a three at the other end to put her team back on top.
The Hawkeyes, down 31-30 at halftime, led 45-39 when the third period ended. Nicole Schumacher and Nicole Harrigan had baskets for Central Valley Academy (2-8) at the start of the fourth and Makayla Donato was fouled on a drive to the basket, giving her a chance to tie the score from the foul line. Donato hit her first shot, pulling the Thunder within one point at 45-44, but missed the second. Cooperstown then went on an 11-0 run to put the game out of reach.
Millea had checked into the game just before Donato was fouled. She had the basket that started the Hawkeyes’ decisive run and ended it with a layup that put Cooperstown up 56-44 with 1:14 left to play.
Schumacher scored in the lane to break the Hawkeyes’ run and Nicole Doolen added a pair of free throws in the final minute.
Doolen led Central Valley Academy with 13 points while Maldonado had nine and Harrigan scored seven.
Millea scored a game-high 16 points and Hall had 14 for Cooperstown. Mallory Arthurs and Lucy Ford chipped in with eight and seven, respectively.
The Thunder’s next game is Tuesday at West Canada Valley.
