ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Empire 8 Conference honored a pair of West Canada Valley High School graduates Monday when it announced its weekly awards. Hartwick College senior Jared Suderley and Utica College sophomore Sarah Wiatr are among the league’s athletes of the week.
Suderley was tabbed the Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the ninth time in his career and first time this season. He helped the Hawks go 3-0 during the week, scoring 80 points in victories over Stevens Institute of Technology, Alfred University and Houghton College. He had 24 points and 16 rebounds in the 74-68 win against Stevens and had 20 and 14 in a record-setting 131-124 overtime win against Alfred Friday. Saturday afternoon, Suderley scored a season-high 36 points — his career high is 40, set in an NCAA Tournament game as a sophomore — grabbed 17 rebounds and shot 21-for-21 at the foul line in a 96-82 win against Houghton.
On Saturday, Suderley also passed 1990 graduate Dave Versocki for second place on Hartwick’s career rebounding list. He has 790. The Alfred game broke Hartwick records for points allowed and combined points by two teams.
Suderley leads the Empire 8 in scoring (20.2 points per game), rebounds (10.6 per game) and free throw accuracy (.875). He has eight double-doubles in 16 games.
Wiatr was recognized as Field Athlete of the Week for her performance at St. Lawrence University’s SLU Invitational. She won the triple jump with a leap of 10.93 meters — approximately 35 feet, 10 1/4 inches — and earned 10 points for the Pioneers. Wiatr also ran a leg of Utica’s third-place four-by-400-meter relay and led the women to a fourth-place finish at the indoor event.
Suderley’s next game is at Utica College Friday while Wiatr and her teammates make the short trip to Clinton Saturday to compete in Hamilton College’s invitational meet.
