  • NEWPORT — John P. “Jack” Ryan, 80, of East Street, died unexpectedly on March 2, 2014, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Utica.
    Mr. Ryan was born on Sept. 23, 1933, in Herkimer, a son of the late Raymond and Mabel (Farrell) Ryan. He graduated from West Canada Valley Central School with the class of 1952. In 1954, he entered the U.S. Army and served in Germany during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1956 at the rank of SP3. Following a few years at local jobs, he drove truck for 30 years for the former Scheidelman, Inc. in Utica.
    Jack was a 62-year member of Newport Volunteer Fire Company No. 4 and served with Kuyahoora Valley Ambulance for 15 years. He was also a member of St. John’s Church and West Canada Valley Post No. 1524 American Legion, both of Newport. Mr. Ryan was a former member of Kuyahoora Valley Rotary.
    Survivors include one son, Patrick (Sandi) Ryan of Canastota; three daughters, Paula (Scott) Morse of Mohawk, Kelly (Joel) Hajdasz of Remsen and Karen Ryan of Raleigh, N.C.; two sisters, Helen Garlock of Newport and Florence (James) Dunnevant of Ilion; one brother-in-law, William “Buster” Waller of Newport; five grandchildren, Michael (Stacey) Morse of Oswego, Alex Morse of Mohawk, Melissa Morse of Syracuse and Olivia and Grace Hajdasz of Remsen; two great-grandchildren, Madison and Jacob Morse; several nieces and nephews; and a very special friend, Barbara Evans of Lowville. His sister, Anne Waller on Jan. 21, 2007, predeceased Jack.
    A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John’s Church, Newport, on Friday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Quy N. Vo, pastor, officiating. Spring interment with military honors will take place in St. John’s Cemetery. Calling hours at the Autenrith Funeral Home, Newport, are Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
