  • HERKIMER — Herkimer County Community College recognized three individuals who will receive the 2014 Torchbearer Award.
The honorees — all of whom served the college during its first 20 years of existence — will be honored at a reception at the college on Friday, Oct. 10.
    This year’s recipients are:
    • Dean Emeritus Robert Campo: Was the first dean of students for the college and an integral part of the self-study report that eventually led to the college’s accreditation in 1978. Students were the center of his practices when he developed personal, career and transfer counseling as well as admissions and financial aid, according to a news release. Campo retired in 1990.
    • Associate Dean Emeritus David Champoux: Media was a focus for Champoux during his 30-plus year tenure at the college by developing the college’s radio and TV broadcast program. His other accolades include helping design the college’s Technology Center and founding and acting as the first president of the Professional Association.
    • Professor Emeritus Thomas LaPuma: As the former athletics director for the college, LaPuma assisted in developing intercollegiate and intramural programs as well as the physical education curriculum for students. Coaching nine team sports during his 30-plus year tenure, he also was instrumental in creating the campus’s fitness center.
Each recipient will receive a plaque that will be featured in the Robert McLaughlin College Center lobby. The plaque bears the following text: “We recognize those who have given themselves to light the way for future generations. Through their vision and commitment, our Torchbearers have built this community college and maintained its tradition of opportunity and excellence.”
Nineteen Torchbearer Awards have been presented since 1999, with recipients including members of the college’s emeritus faculty and staff, as well as community members who contributed significantly to the growth and success of the college.
