  • UTICA — The American Red Cross of the Mohawk Valley selected Lawrence Gilroy as its Humanitarian of the Year and will honor Gilroy at its 15th annual Real Heroes Breakfast at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 4, at the Field House on the campus of SUNYIT in Marcy.
The Michael Cianfrocco Family Humanitarian of the Year Award is presented annually to a person who exemplifies the humanitarian spirit of the Mohawk Valley through his or her positive contributions to the community. Cianfrocco was the former community executive of the American Red Cross of the Mohawk Valley who died in 2001 at the age of 54.
Gilroy is president of Gilroy, Kernan & Gilroy, a risk management, insurance and employee benefit firm. Active in the community, Gilroy currently serves as chair of the Utica College Board of Trustees, as a member of the executive committee of Mohawk Valley EDGE, as a member of the Boilermaker Road Race Committee and as a member of the advisory board of the Masonic Medical Research Lab.
Since August 2011, Gilroy has served as co-chair of the regional economic development council for the Mohawk Valley region.
A graduate of Hamilton College, Gilroy and his wife, Elizabeth, are Mohawk Valley natives.
“In the Mohawk Valley, it’s not a matter of if you know Larry Gilroy, it’s a matter of how you know him,” said Julie Darling, community executive of the American Red Cross of the Mohawk Valley, in a news release. “We’re thrilled to honor Larry as our Humanitarian of the Year to carry on the humanitarian spirit that Michael Cianfrocco brought to the Red Cross for so many years.”
The Real Heroes Breakfast celebrates the Red Cross mission of alleviating human suffering by recognizing residents from Oneida, Herkimer, Otsego and Delaware counties who have performed heroic acts in life-threatening situations. Proceeds from the Real Heroes Breakfast benefit the American Red Cross of the Mohawk Valley.
Tickets for the Real Heroes Breakfast are $25 each or $500 for a table of eight. To purchase tickets, contact the Red Cross of the Mohawk Valley at 733-4666.
