  • AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL: Ilion Post shuts out Love Post

  • ILION, N.Y.†ó Mark Spina and Joe DeSarro combined on a two-hit shutout Sunday and Ilion Post defeated Love Post 9-0 for its fifth win in six games.
    Ilion Post supported Spinaís start with single runs in the second and fourth innings at Diss Memorial Field then broke the game open in the fifth. The first run came on a pair of errors after Ryan Fahy had walked. Fahy drew another free pass in the fourth and later scored on a Mike Dobek single; a pair of hit batters left the bases loaded in the fourth.
    DeSarro started the five-run fifth with a double and came around to score when Justin Kiesow tripled to the gap in right-center. Kiesow scored on a wild pitch.
    The Ilion Post bats went back to work with one out. Joe Juliano singled, stole a base, and scored on another hit by Dobek. Colin Warmingham extended the inning with a two-out hit-and-run single, and both runners came home on a double by Josh Urtz.
    Kiesow cracked a two-run single to complete the scoring in the sixth inning.
    Spina went five innings for the win, striking out six batters, walking one and allowing a pair of Justin Kranbuhl singles, one in the second inning, the other in the fourth.
    DeSarro recorded all six outs by strikeout in the final two innings. He walked one batter and did not allow a hit.
    DeSarro, Kiesow and Dobek each had two of Ilion Postís nine hits. Fahy walked three times and scored twice. DeSarro also scored two runs.
    Ilion Post, now 10-6 overall and 9-6 in District V, is home again Wednesday for a game against Clonan/Wicks-Staley. Ilion Post plays in Rome Thursday against Parkhurst Post and has another home game Friday against Sherrill Post.
    Love Postís record is 2-10.
