  • NEWARK, N.Y. — For the second time in less than a week, the Newark Pilots held Mohawk Valley’s bats in check Thursday and defeated the DiamondDawgs at Colburn Park
The Pilots followed Saturday’s 13-0 shutout with a 7-2 win Thursday. Michael Springer earned a share of the Perfect Game Collegiate League’s Pitcher of the Week award for his 7 2/3 scoreless innings Saturday. B.J. Nobles threw a complete game Thursday and held the DiamondDawgs to two runs on eight hits.
The DiamondDawgs had scored 78 runs while winning six of their previous nine games.
Tim Lewis got the Pilots started with a two-out triple in the third inning; he scored when Colin Hawk’s relay throw sailed past third base.
Leadoff hitter Braxton Wilkes and Tommy Wagner followed Lewis’ triple with consecutive singles.
With runners at the corners, Wagner broke early from first base and was picked off but Wilkes scored during the rundown for a 2-0 lead.
Wagner reached base again in the sixth inning on an error and Tanner Giesel homered with two outs to extend Newark’s lead to 4-1. Wagner added a two-run single in the seventh inning and Dorian Hairston drove in a run with his single in the eighth.
Zach Collett drove in both Mohawk Valley runs. He hit his league-leading sixth home run in the fourth inning. Will Trahan singled and scored on Collett’s double in the eighth.
In addition to Collett, Trey Stover and Michael Triller, playing his second game as the team’s latest addition, each had two hits for the DiamondDawgs. Bryan Greig allowed six runs in 6 1/3 innings but only three were earned.
Wagner, Giesel and Austin Clock each had two hits for the Pilots. Giesel had two runs batted in and two runs scored, Wagner drove in two runs, and Lewis scored twice.
Nobles struck out eight batters and walked one. He has won both of his decisions.
The DiamondDawgs have back-to-back home games Friday and Saturday at Veterans Memorial Park. The Glens Falls Golden Eagles visit Little Falls Friday and Newark is Saturday’s opponent. The Newark game will be followed by fireworks rescheduled from July 3; the DiamondDawgs need to win that game to split the teams’ season series.
