I, for one, have long been skeptical of most references to the so-called good old days.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m as nostalgic as the next guy. Like most everyone else, I have fond memories of the past, especially now that I’m in my eighth decade. But I also try to remind myself that life wasn’t all peaches and cream in the days of yore. And when I examine the true history of American society in the years preceding my own lifetime, the less idyllic it all seems.
