The Mid-York Library System has 42 member libraries in Oneida, Herkimer and Madison Counties.  These member libraries have chosen to participate in a unique service that offers many library benefits to residents of New York State.   These include the ability to use a library card at any member library to borrow books, DVDs, music and more.

The biggest feature of utilizing the Mid York Library System is the ability to “borrow” eBooks to your mobile device.  And the cost is free.  It’s just like borrowing a physical book from the library.

The first step is to have a valid library card.  If you don’t have one, simply take your identification to the library and get your card.  Next, using the internet on your mobile device, simply download the OverDrive app for your mobile device.

When your app has been installed, log into the system by using your library card and your pin number.   This system also requires an Adobe ID.  Instructions on how to obtain this are available on the Mid York Library System.  Search and find the book you wish to borrow.  If the book is available, you may download it immediately.

If the book has been checked out by another user, the Mid York Library will email you when the book is ready.  Just remember that the library can only loan as many copies of a given book as it has.  So if the system only has one copy of the book you wish to borrow, you may have to wait.    After receiving your email, you may then go and download the book.   You have three weeks to read the book.  At the end of three weeks, the book will just disappear from your mobile device.  Consider it returned.

Audio eBooks may be downloaded to your personal computer.  Instructions are available for this as well.

If this all seems too much, don’t worry, the Mid York Library System has videos and pdf documents to assist you in the process of learning to utilize library books on your mobile device.  Or you may simply take your device into the library and they will help you set up and learn to use the OverDrive app.
