Both Poland soccer teams advanced in their respective state playoffs with regional victories Saturday.

The undefeated boys beat Section IV Marathon in a penalty kick shootout at Norwich High School after playing to  1-1 overtime tie. The Tornadoes converted on all five of their penalty kicks and clinched the victory when Ross Agen, the final Poland shooter in the opening round of five, followed a Marathon miss with a successful shot inside the left post. Mark Hennings scored on a header in the first half off a corner kick for Poland and Marathon tied the score off a penalty kick in the second half.

The Poland girls defeated Section IV Franklin 4-1 in Fulton. Franklin scored first but the Tornadoes tallied two goals before halftime to take the lead. Mikayla Blumenstock had three goals after Paige Sullivan got Poland on the board with a direct kick.

The boys’ Final Four is in Middletown while the girls head to Cortland. Semifinal matches for both teams will be played Nov. 17.

More to come.
