As a result of a one-time charge to village of Frankfort taxpayers, the total amount of unpaid taxes this year jumped to almost $133,000, compared to $85,000 last year, officials said Thursday.
But, despite the big increase, the actual percentage of taxpayers paying their bills remained almost the same.
In the 2008-09 fiscal year just over 89 percent of the tax base paid village taxes, with 96 unpaid bills, compared to just over 88 percent in 2009-10, with 102 unpaid bills, officials said.
Village board members attributed the spike to a charge meant to cover the municipality’s cost for buying out of the county’s workers compensation plan.
The one-time payment of $3.65 per $1,000 of assessed value covered the general fund portion, over $200,000, of the buyout. The overall settlement came to just under $585,000, with the difference coming from the village’s power and light department budget and bonding.
