A 22-year-old Oriskany woman died in an accident Saturday when her snowmobile sank in the Fulton Chain of Lakes, according to Webb police.
Nicole Robertello was pronounced dead at the scene after firefighters recovered her body nearly two hours after the accident at 9:15 p.m., Webb police said.
Robertello was traveling westbound in channel area of the second and third lakes along with Clayton Knutti, 24, of Ava, Webb police reported.
The two riders encountered open water and Knutti accelerated and was able to cross, but he looked back and saw that Robertello and her snowmobile had fallen into the water, police said. Knutti jumped into the frigid water in attempt to rescue Robertello but was unsuccessful. He was then able to get out of the water and run to a nearby home to call for emergency responders, police reported.
The Old Forge Fire Department recovered Robertello’s body and Herkimer County Coroner Danforth Rivet Jr. pronounced her dead at the scene, police said. Knutti was transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Utica where he was treated for hypothermia.
