Nothing in this world is free, or so goes the old adage.
For the second year in a row, New Life Church is trying to prove this pessimistic outlook untrue.
Hosting the Free Family Fun Days on July 26 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at its campus at 337 Protection Avenue in the village of Herkimer is the first step.
With a wide variety of activities, games, entertainment and food being offered to the community for free, Pastor Joe Jansen feels things may be turning around.
“It’s very easy for all of us to forget how blessed we are to live in this community during times of economic downturn and other indicators that times are hard.” stated Jansen. “New Life Church wants to create a day of laughter and fellowship, and we do not want cost to be a factor that someone can’t come and enjoy. Parents can have the relief of being able to provide a fun day for their family, and no money is allowed.”
Last year over 600 people attended the event, and this time around the attendance goal is set even higher.
“We’re equipped to do over 1,000.” said Jansen.
Visitors can try games like frogger and ring toss, or test their courage on the 22-ft. slide, inflatable obstacle course, and moon bounce.
Those looking to relax have the Utica Zoomobile, crafts and face painting, and the classic car and motorcycle show.
Food choices include: hamburgers, hot dogs, snow cones, slushies, cotton candy, popcorn, chips, and more.
New this year is a drawing for several theme gift baskets, with tickets distributed to attendees.
Every aspect of the event is completely free of charge, and the entire community is invited.
“A lot of people were surprised.” said Jansen referring to the quality and scope of Family Fun Days. “When they hear free they think it’s going to be cheap. But once they’re here they see how great it is.”
Since the event doubles as a culmination to the Vacation Bible School, which runs July 21 to 25, there will also be a music tent featuring songs performed by the students from kindergarten to sixth grade.
Jake Klock,  8, and Paige Klock, 9, both attended the event last year and didn’t seem disappointed.
They both agreed on a favorite memory and what to look forward to, “The slide.”
