In forming the Chamber Alliance of the Mohawk Valley five years ago, nine area chambers of commerce decided to work toward building a unified business community, according to John Scarano, Herkimer County Chamber of Commerce director.
The basic idea: Bring businesses anywhere in Herkimer and Oneida counties and everyone stands to gain.
Boonville, Camden, Clinton, Herkimer, Kuyahoora Valley, Marcy, New Hartford, Rome and Trenton are all member chambers. If one of these groups draws a new business there is job creation in general in the region, meaning more people will be hired, Scarano said.
“It gives us more clout, more insight,” he added, commenting on the further benefits. “When you get nine different chambers, representing over 2,000 businesses, we come to a common ground. That means a lot in this area as far as a voice.”
The alliance is trying to capitalize on this coalition approach by holding a networking event on Wednesday, Nov. 4, at the Holiday Inn, located in the Utica Business Park, New Hartford.
Scarano said the event allows for networking during a wine and cheese reception beginning at 5 p.m. The event also includes a presentation at 6 p.m. with guest speaker David Casullo, senior vice president of Human Resources at Raymour and Flanigan Furniture and Little Falls native.
The cost is $8 per person and the public and chamber members are both welcome to attend, Scarano said. Reservations are requested by Oct. 30 and may be made at any participating chambers of commerce, or by calling the Herkimer chamber at 866-7820.
“We’re really just trying to promote being united in the Mohawk Valley,” Scarano said.
