High school students struggling with their Global 1 & 2 courses may see some help in the near future.
The Credit Recovery Program will allow the nine juniors and four sophomores at Ilion Jr./Sr. High School the opportunity to work on their problem areas in Global Studies, but continue to work on the criteria recommended for their grade-level.
“The goal is by the end of the year, that these students would have passed and mastered these concepts,” said Ilion Jr.-Sr. High School Principal Renee Rudd. “That not only they pass the Regents, but that they get course credit.”
The Global Studies course is essentially a two-year program with the Regents given at the end of the second year. The Global 2 students who fail the course, but pass the Regents are eligible for this program.
Students will be able to work on the course in a computer lab at school or at home for 85 minutes a day. Rudd said while the students would be able to work independently, all tests and quizzes would be monitored by a teacher.
The Credit Recovery Program will operate through the Oneida-Madison-Herkimer BOCES. Students will be able to sign on and create a password so they can access the online course and focus on their problem areas, as assessed by a program monitor.
This will also be more cost effective for the school in the long run, said Rudd, since it will cut down on the number of students in summer school.
Rudd announced the program during the Ilion Central School Board meeting on Monday. Superintendent Cosimo Tangorra supported the program.
“If a student wasn’t successful [the first time], it makes very little sense to make them do the same thing,” he said.
The pilot for this program begins Feb. 25. She, the assistant principal, counselors and other teachers will be able to monitor the progress the students make to see if the pilot works and will consider expanding it to other school courses if successful.
“They will be able to graduate and not feel like they are not able to get caught up,” said Rudd.
