The annual Barringer Road Elementary School Apple Fest brought many visitors to the school to enjoy ames and crafts, but to also support the students at the school.
“The PTO puts it on for the kids in school. It provides for field trips, or any extra help the kids need,” said Winona Reed, treasurer for the school’s PTO and an organizer for the event.
Reed said there was no specific amount of money set as a goal for the event.
“We just do the best we can,” she said.
On Saturday, the school hallways and classrooms were transformed from a learning environment into a market with about 40 crafters and vendors selling their homemade products. Tables were also set up displaying the many raffle items people could have a chance to win.
“I picked out napkin holders from that very nice couple over there,” said Kathy Wilcox, of Ilion, about Barb and Dick Jones, of Oneida. “They were selling their homemade wooden products called B&D Tiny Pines.”
There was also plenty of food for sale, including hot dogs, pizza and chili.
Reed said one of the things people enjoy most about the event is the apple crisp.
“The apple crisp is famous,” she said.
Children looked forward to some of the crafts they could do at the festival, especially the pumpkin painting. A long row of painted pumpkins formed in one of the hallways so they could dry for the children who painted them.
“He loves the pumpkin painting and the food, too,” said Kathy O’Connor, of St. Louis, Mo., about her great-nephew, Evan Catanzarite, who placed raffle tickets in different containers for different prizes.
Trinity Pedersen sat next to the pumpkin she painted during the festival for a photo.
“We wanted to check out the arts and crafts,” said her father, Tom Pedersen, of Ilion, who attended with his three daughters and wife. “We make it an annual trip.”
