The story of a small-town banker with big-time dreams will cross the stage at Herkimer High School this week.
Members of the Herkimer High School Footlighters held a dress rehearsal for their production of “Crazy for You” on Monday night. The George and Ira Gershwin musical includes such classic songs as “I’ve Got Rhythm” and “Someone to Watch Over Me.” The musical is directed by John Krause and choreographed by Dale Cruskie.
“He’s a banker, but he doesn’t want to be. He wants to be a dancer and be in showbiz,” said Daniel Luppino, a senior, who will be playing the lead role of Bobby Child.
Luppino said he’s done some acting in the past. He played the supporting role of Jimmy in the play “Thoroughly Modern Millie.” He plans to continue with acting in college.
“It’s a really good way to meet a lot of people at school,” he said, on why he enjoys acting. “Also, being on stage, there’s that adrenaline.”
While waiting for the dress rehearsal to begin, students practiced in the hallway outside the auditorium. The sounds of tap-dancing echoed loudly down the hall and make-up artists put the finishing touches on the players.
Mike Fahy, a senior, playing Jimmy, and Kaitlynne Carpenter, a junior, who is in the ensemble, worked over the steps in their dance routine together.
Fahy said he was excited to be in the production.
“This is my first play,” he said. “I wanted to experience something different. I play all sports.”
Carpenter, however, said this was her fourth play.
“I like that I can be somebody else (on the stage),” she said.
Students started rehearsals in January. Kirsten Smith, assistant director and eighth-grade English teacher at the school, said the students have been working hard.
“They’ve been in the school from sun up to sun down working (on the show). They’ve really come a long way and they’ve been learning how to tap. That has been a challenge,” she said.
Performances will be held throughout the week. Wednesday’s performance will have general seating available. Reserved seating will be available for the March 11, 12 and 13 shows. Tickets are $6 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens. Wednesday’s performance will be free to senior citizens.
