More than 80 runners, walkers and children turned out Saturday to help the Ilion Geology Club raise money for its trip to Hawaii by participating in the inaugural Volcano Run.
Sixty-six runners completed the five-kilometer course with Ilion senior Brandon Rawson setting the pace at 17:18. Rawson finished 55 seconds ahead of Justin Bennett with the next runner, Andrew Burch, another minute behind him. Devin Murphy, Jim Mott and Andray Drozdoff also broke the 20-minute barrier.
Lauren Belfast, another Iliion senior, placed 15th overall and first among female contestants at 22:26. Emily LaLonde was the next runner to cross the line at 22:57.
A group of walkers completed an alternate two-mile course and youngsters participated in a pair of sprints on the high school’s track with younger children running 200 meters and older running 400. The morning race coincided with soccer practice for Ilion’s varsity girls; those who chose not to run the road course ran five kilometers on the track.
The event raised $1,193.14 toward the Geology Club’s travel expenses. The club makes a biennial trip to Hawaii to learn about the environment and culture of the islands. Club members take a year-long course after school before making the trip. The group faces travel costs of $3,000 per student for its trip in the spring of 2013.
Upcoming fund-raisers for the trip include an Aug. 29 Family Fun Day dinner at Friendly’s in Sangertown Mall, a Sept. 16 pancake breakfast at the Ninety-Nine Restaurant in New Hartford, an Oct. 15 dinner at Applebee’s in Herkimer, an ongoing bottle drive at Mohawk’s redemption center, a monthly weekend soale through Five Below in New Hartford and a sale of Scentsy fragrance warmers.
