Mohawk, N.Y. -

A Mohawk area man was pronounced dead at the scene Tuesday afternoon after his vehicle was struck by a tractor-trailer truck pulling a full milk tanker on Route 5S in the town of German Flatts. State Police report the tanker, driven by Larry G. Larkins, of Dayton Road, Remsen, struck a 1993 Plymouth Voyager minivan driven by Elbert Dillenbeck, 79, of 836 State Route 5S, town of German Flatts, at about 2:30 p.m. According to police reports, Dillenbeck pulled out of his driveway on Route 5S, just past Miller Road, into the path of the eastbound Mack tractor-trailer and the collision caused both vehicles to overturn. Dillenbeck was pronounced dead at the scene while Larkins was transported by MOVAC Ambulance to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Utica with apparent non-life threatening injuries, according to police. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation responded to the scene for the spillage of the tractor-trailer’s engine oil and milk from the tanker. The Mohawk and East Herkimer Volunteer Fire departments also responded and Route 5S from the South Washington Street Bridge to Route 167 was closed for several hours. The investigation is continuing.
