The Mohawk school board OK’d two resolutions at its Monday meeting that will aid its feasibility study with the Ilion school district.
Superintendent Joyce Caputo said both resolutions were approved, with two board members absent. One resolution authorized the merger feasibility study to “describe how the Mohawk and Ilion Central School districts may operate if a reorganization were implemented” and the second was to authorize the superintendent to partner with Ilion school district Superintendent Cosimo Tangorra to develop and submit a state High Priority Planning Grant to fund a reorganizational study.
Caputo said the board plans to discuss the feasibility study at their Feb. 22 regular meeting.
School officials at Mohawk and Ilion school districts rekindled talks about merging school districts last year after the state budget proposal included a 3 percent cut in aid to schools.  Last August, a workshop was held by a state School Board Association group called Advisory Solutions to discuss possibilities of sharing services between the two districts. Shared services can range from sharing utilities and teachers to fully merging both districts.
Tangorra said he is submitting the $45,000 grant application to the Local Government Services, a division of the Department of State. Each school district will also match $2,500 for the study. He said he hopes to have the grant submitted by the end of next week.
Oppenheim-Ephratah and St. Johnsville school districts recently completed a feasibility study and have voted to move forward with a merger study. The school districts already share much of their sports program and are now considering a full athletic merger.
