The Frankfort-Schuyler School District Board of Education on Wednesday appointed Julie Tangorra as the new middle school principal.
The appointment is effective Aug. 9, contingent upon approval by the state Education Department, according to Robert Reina, superintendent. The salary is $70,000.
Tangorra brings 12 years of middle school experience to the district from her time spent at the Waterville Central School District.
She served as the guidance counselor and district Committee on Special Education chairperson, and was a member of the district’s Curriculum Council, Comprehensive District Education Planning and Strategic Planning and Safety committees among other responsibilities.
Prior to her employment with Waterville, Tangorra worked as a prevention counselor with Insight House; a prevention education specialist for the Mohawk Valley Council on Alcoholism and Addiction and a study skills instructor for SUNY Oneonta.
Tangorra is replacing John Labuzzetta as the middle school principal at Frankfort-Schuyler.
Labuzzetta, who had a $76,000 salary, resigned his position in late March shortly after being charged with petit larceny and possession of burglary tools by New Hartford Town Police in connection to a shoplifting incident at a Walmart. Town court officials could not be reached Friday for information on a July 8 court date for Labuzzetta.
In other action:
• Both the school board president, Michael Button, and vice president, Lisa LoRe, were both re-appointed.
• A group of students and two faculty members, Carm Cooper and Joseph Cantales, approached the school board to request to hold the prom outside of the school district, according to Reina.
The incoming juniors and seniors made a presentation in an attempt to convince the board members to allow the change.
An incident with alcohol at a prom being held at Daniele's Valley View in Utica resulted in the school board deciding to hold the last four proms at the school’s gymnasium, according to Reina.
But with the student’s “terrific” behavior at proms since the incident and the incoming class “taking ownership” of the event, Reina said the board agreed to allow the 2011 prom to be held outside the district.
The students and faculty advisors are trying to find a venue to hold the event, Reina said.
