It’s been a slow winter for all of central New York, especially in the Mohawk Valley. It seems Sunday night’s snowfall was the most snow we’ve seen in a couple weeks.
According to WUTR Chief Meteorologist Jeff Matthews, “Sunday night’s snowfall was due to a cold front that was followed by some lingering lake effect snow.”
Residents throughout Herkimer were shoveling and plowing during Monday afternoon.
Rosita Cedino, of Herkimer said, “The snow is driving me crazy. I have to shovel now before the snow freezes.”
Howard Schaffer, another Herkimer resident, said he helps his neighbors’ snow removal since he owns a truck with a plow and a four-wheeler with a plow, perfect for smaller snow falls.
Although the snow did die down throughout the day Matthews said two to three more inches of snow could fall by Tuesday morning, but it will not stay for long. Tuesday’s high is expected to be 43 degrees and for Wednesday he said residents can expect a high of 48 degrees.
It’s hard not to picture this spring as an extension of the winter season, but according to Matthews, “there is no relationship correlating a mild winter to a snowy spring, it’s more of superstitious thinking.” There might be a few more snowfalls, but nothing that will develop and lock in for the long run, Matthews said.
During the months of October, November and December New York state made the record for the third most least snowy months recorded. This November was also recorded as the fourth warmest November on record. As for the snow lovers out there, the best advice Matthews had to give was to stock up on snow gear now, as prices are low and snow shops are hurting for sales.
For now it’s in Punxsutawney Phil’s hands to decide if any more winter weather is on it’s way.
