The Herkimer Elks Lodge No. 1439 held a dinner for their scholarship recipients at its lodge on Mary Street on Wednesday, June 27.

Eleven area students from five school districts were recognized with the Herkimer Elks awards, which totaled $2,800, according to Scott J. Pizer, Elks exalted ruler for the fraternal year 2012-13.

“This is an annual scholarship initiative from our lodge we are pleased to honor these students and their families,” said Timothy Zaleski, chairman of the Herkimer Elks lodge scholarship. “The lodge presented these awards to 10 students who will be attending community colleges; a $300 award was also given to a Herkimer High School senior for the Frank Gabler Award.”  

The following students were named this year’s award recipients:

• Herkimer High School: Brandon Scialdone, son of Gina Massaro; Brooke Rando, daughter of Daniel and Tammy Rando.

• Jarvis High School: Adrienne Flemming, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Flemming; Jeffrey DiGeorgio, son of Barbara DiGeorgio.

• Owen D. Young High School: Rebecca Jordan, of Fort Plain; and Stephanie Treadwell, of Mohawk.

• Richfield Springs High School: Sarah Stevens, daughter of Bill and Mary Stevens; Logan Ruth, son of Jeanette and Mark Nassimos.

• West Canada Valley High School: Hailey Phillips, daughter of Michelle of Scott Phillips; Thomas Roberts, son of Erin and Thomas Roberts, Sr.
Also, Herkimer High School senior Daniel Dunham received the Frank Gabler Award. He is the son of Melissa Dunham.

On the New York State level, Emily L. Hunt, of Mohawk, received the state Elks Association Allocated Award and Brianne Bello, of Herkimer, received the state Elks Association $1,000 Scholarship Award.

Pizer said, “For as Elks on a local level, we are proud to be part of a greater good. Not only on the local levels, but also on the state and national levels, the Great Heart of Elkdom generously presents thousands of dollars in awards and scholarships to many young inspired students continuing their education across this state and our great nation each year.”
