Frankfort-Schuyler Elementary School students watched in surprise as Superintendent Robert Reina shaved his head in front of the entire school during the Pennies for Patients assembly on Wednesday morning.
At the start of the month Reina challenged students and faculty to raise over $1,600 for the elementary school’s fourth year of contributing to Pennies for Patients and in return he would shave his head in honor of family friend Susan DePasquale, who underwent cancer treatment, and Frankfort-Schuyler Central School District cancer survivors.
“It’s a great thing to help raise money for cancer research and it’s especially important because the kids did this,” said Reina. “The students did all the work and it’s a reflection of how giving the kids are.”
Reina chose to meet his challenge on Wednesday as a way to honor cancer survivors and celebrate his and DePasquale’s birthday.
Pennies for Patients is a fundraiser that supports the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Their mission is to cure and improve the quality of life for patients and families.
The fundraiser started at the beginning of March and ended March 18.
By the end of the collection period donations from the elementary and middle schools, the tenth grade class, board of education members, local businesses and the community totaled $2,823.03.
Pennies for Patients coordinator and Frankfort-Schuyler Elementary teacher Heather Scialdo said she didn’t think the school would be able to raise over $1,600 in such a short amount of time. “It was surprising to find that by the end of two weeks we met our goal and almost doubled it,” she said.
The elementary class that raised the largest amount of pennies was Eric Moreau’s fifth grade class with a donation of over $300.
Proceeds raised for the Pennies for Patients fundraiser will be used locally within the state.
