The Herkimer County Hunger Coalition received a donation of $1,970 from three employees of the Iroquois Travel Plaza, a collection of restaurants at the Little Falls Thruway stop.
Last fall, Melissa Dykeman, Joanne Miller and Brian Day spearheaded a canister drive at the plaza.
“I’d like to thank Melissa, Joanne and Brian for their efforts, along with coalition Director Kira Andrilla for making the initial contact with Iroquois Plaza. Also, thanks to the many customers who donated to the cause. This donation will serve as the kick-off for our 2013 Winter Coats for Children Campaign,” Herkimer County Hunger Coalition founder Ray Lenarcic said Wednesday, adding the coalition’s primary project for 2013 is to raise the funds necessary to purchase the coats by Nov. 1.
Before the launch of the campaign, local children received coats as part of the hunger coalition’s Gram Lorraine Children’s Christmas Clothing Program during the first week of December.
Since the coats will be needed earlier this year, Lenarcic said the coalition will sponsor a number of fundraisers and request the public make donations to meet the new deadline.
“The more coats we can buy means fewer coats that have to be purchased by our sponsors, thus enabling the latter to purchase more items of clothing and boots for deserving children,” he said.
In 2012, Gram Lorraine served more than 1,000 children in Herkimer County.
“On behalf of the directors, I’d like to thank everyone involved with the 2012 Gram Lorraine program from the coordinators, to the volunteers, to our host sites, the numerous donors and especially the hundreds of sponsors without whose generosity this program simply could not exist and whose support guaranteed the magic of Christmas for over 1,000 children,” said Little Falls Gram Lorraine Children’s Christmas Clothing Program Director David Petkovsek.
The hunger coalition presently has coats available for children in need at Benton Hall Academy in Little Falls, Fisher Elementary School in Mohawk, Barringer and Remington elementary schools in Ilion, Frankfort-Schuyler Elementary School, Owen D. Young Central School, Mount Markham Elementary School, Poland Elementary School and Harry Hoag Elementary School in Fort Plain, as well as for consumers of the Herkimer Area Resource Center and the Herkimer BOCES Migrant Workers Program.
Donations to the Herkimer County Hunger Coalition are tax deductible and can be sent to HCHC, P.O. Box 622, Herkimer, N.Y. 13350. The coalition’s first fundraiser of the year will be a two-man best ball bowling tournament on Saturday, Feb. 16, at R.D.’s Gorge View Lanes in Little Falls.
