Herkimer, N.Y. —
Two Frankfort residents have been attacked by a rabid gray fox, according to Herkimer County Public Health officials.
One resident was bit in the left after he found a gray fox eating cat food on his porch.
The fox continued to menace the resident until a state Department of Environmental Conservation officer responded and shot the animal, officials said.
A neighboring resident reported he also recently had been attacked by a gray fox. The animal bit into the resident’s heavy boot, but did not break the skin, officials said.
Rabies has been diagnosed in foxes, a heifer cow, skunks, raccoons and bats in all regions of Herkimer County. An exposure to rabies can be fatal for a human, a pet or other domestic animals.
Residents should vaccinate their pets and domestic animals, officials said.
