The German Flatts Town Park’s canal side is getting a bit of a facelift.
Bulldozers and excavators are digging and working along side of the canal near the town park.
The New York State Canal Corporation is working along side the canal to clean out any sediment that might have built up along the edge of the canal. The mouth of Spohn Creek flows into the canal, causing debris to fall in and pile up along side the canal, according to officials.
“Canal workers are taking advantage of the mild weather to work on the canal,” said Division Canal Engineer Ambrose Barbuto, of Syracuse.
The lower water levels also make this an opportunistic time to work, said Barbuto.
Frank Spatto, German Flatts town supervisor, said this is a routine occurrence.
“If the creek sediments stay within the walls of the canal it causes trouble for canal traffic as well as future maintenance issues,” he said, adding the process of clearing the canal is never ending.
The New York State Canal Corporation is also clearing out canal areas in Utica, said officials.
