It was a bittersweet Saturday afternoon for the folks involved with the Funtrak Model Train Society. They spent the day at Skinner Auto Group, with several of their tracks up and running, members scurrying about, getting the scenery in order. You could hear the laughter and the close camaraderie among the Funtrak members. But there was also a touch of sadness.
James “Jim” Williams, one of the original four founding members of the model train society here in the Mohawk Valley, died unexpectedly last Monday due to complications from surgery on his spleen. At age 41, Williams had enjoyed good health, and loved devoting his spare time to his favorite hobby -- trains.
“He was the real ‘go-to’ guy,” said Funtrak President Brian King, “And there aren’t even the words to say how much he will be missed.”
For the past 17 years, Funtrak has been indulging their love of model trains, and entertaining the public at their many shows and demonstrations. “We like to be out in the community,” said King, “Its why we are at Skinner’s Auto Group today, taking the time to interact with the public, and share our passion for trains with them.”
Looking down the road, Funtrak is looking forward with expectation to their time at the Fonda Fair for the second year. “We had such an incredibly good time last year, we can’t wait to get back there,” said King.
In the meantime, the quiet, yet pleasant atmosphere at Skinner’s was evident as the Funtrak guys prepared to go from their exhibition to the funeral of their friend and colleague.
“He was a good man. He will be missed. And he would have wanted us to hold this event today regardless, and so we did. We just want to take the time to say thank you to Jim, and that we all love him.”
