A June 22 burglary at American Legion Post 31 in Little Falls may lead to the post’s baseball team’s cutting its season short, according to Scott Blumberg, team manager.
Blumberg said within a week he will be forced to cancel remaining games because a portion of funds taken during the theft were intended for the baseball team, which is made up of 15- to 19-year-olds.
“It’s just too bad the kids have to suffer because of a burglary,” he said in a phone interview.
Little Falls police continue to investigate the break-in at Post 31 on West Main Street.
Chief of police Michael Masi and Sgt. Ron Petrie, investigating the incident, were not available Tuesday afternoon for comment on progress of the investigation.
Police believe the rear of the building was used as an access point to take an unspecified amount of money between Sunday night and early Monday morning, according to reports.
Blumberg said the team has already canceled several non-league games because of a lack of funds.
The team has about 14 games left, counting playoffs. And with roughly $180 left in funds previously set aside for next season, Blumberg thinks he may be able to salvage three remaining regular season league games.
Another option is setting up a game at Doubleday Field in Cooperstown and calling it a season, Blumberg added.
If the funds are not recovered soon, the team would need to raise at least $1,000 to finish all the games, he explained, adding that this figure is not representative of the full amount taken during the burglary.
Little Falls Post 31 American Legion Baseball draws players from West Canada Valley, Little Falls, Fort Plain, Canajoharie and Dolgeville.
