The American Red Cross of the Mohawk Valley has opened nominations for their Great Heroes Awards program for 2012.
The Great Heroes Awards recognize individuals and businesses who are nominated by the public for their bravery, service to community and unselfish deeds that are above and beyond the call of duty.
Nominations are sought for six award categories, including the Clara Barton Award, Blood Services Award, Emergency Responder Award, Military Award, Mary Haggerty Educator Award and the Youth Leadership Award. The deadline for nominations is Feb. 10.
“We depend on community nominations to hear all of the great stories about the unsung heroes of our area,” said chapter Executive Victor Fariello, Jr. “There is no shortage of people deserving of this recognition in our area, but we need to hear about them.”
He added nominees could be a neighbor, a friend, a professional or a business or group in the community. Awardees, he said, will be selected by a committee of volunteers.
Fariello said in addition to the public nominees, the Red Cross selects an individual and a company for the top great Heroes awards. This year, the Mohawk Valley chapter will honor Kevin Crosley, president and chief executive officer of the Herkimer Area Resource Center, as the individual award winner and Bonide Products, of Oriskany, as the corporate award winner.
Fariello said Crosley was chosen for his leadership role in the HARC and the community and for being a friend to many community organizations, including the Red Cross. He said Bonide Products was selected for being a good community partner, employer and benefactor to area agencies.
Crosley and Bonide Products will be recognized along with the other award winners at the 15th Annual Great Heroes Breakfast on March 15 at Herkimer County Community College. A limited number of tickets for the breakfast will be made available to the public beginning in February.
