Two Herkimer County Community College students arrested following a fight on campus on April 25 appeared separately in Herkimer Village Court on Wednesday.
The fight in question took place in the Campus Meadows parking lot and resulted in three HCCC students being charged with second-degree assault, Basil Chambers, 18, Brian Johnson, 21, and David Altman, 20, all originally of Brooklyn.
Chambers and Johnson were also charged with possession of a weapon.
All three were sent to the Herkimer County Correctional Facility in lieu of $15,000 bail and $30,000 bond.
Altman has since posted bail, and two others involved in the incident have gone back to school.
At the court Wednesday, Johnson had his bail lowered to $5,000 cash and $10,000 bond, according to his lawyer Audrey Dunning. She added that a grand jury notice previously served set a date of May 22.
Chambers had his bond lowered to $10,000 and the case is going to a Grand Jury also on May 22, according to his mother Yvonne Peace, of Brooklyn. Outside the court Peace said she didn’t know the amount of the cash bail.
A group upwards of 25 individuals consisting of family, friends, students and supporters lined the halls outside and filled several seats inside the courtroom.
Aisha Flowers, an HCCC student, said the support accomplishes a lot, “At least they’ll know we’re serious.”
“It’s an expression of love and unity amongst the students.” said Peace. “I love the students that came out and I want to thank them.”
