When the moe.down festival visits the area next weekend, one fan hopes to leave the schoolchildren better equipped to face the upcoming school year.
Evan Rosman, of Elmont, and a longtime moe. fan, said they will set up collection bins for school supplies for children and teachers at Mohawk’s Fisher Elementary School. Rosman said he decided he wanted to do something since there is a lot of free time when attending the music festivals.
“You can sit around meet with people, but I’m not the kind of person that enjoys chit-chatting. Instead, you want to do something positive,” he said.
Some of the items Rosman is asking festival-goers to bring include bookbags, crayons, No. 2 pencils, colored pocket folders, colored pencils, markers, glue sticks, spiral notebooks, notebook filler paper and scissors. For teachers, they are asking for dry erase markers, stickers (given as awards to  children) and basic office supplies.
Rosman said collection bins were filled three times when they first started the collection last year when moe.down was held in Turin.
“I could not believe the outpouring of supplies we collected,” he said.
Rosman said he and others want to “leave a positive image” on the community with the festival coming to town, rather than the negative image that that concert-goers usually bring.
“I am just surprised by the generosity and commitment. A person who is organizing this for us isn’t even from this area. For him to offer and to do this is just phenomenal, I can’t say enough about it,” said Fisher Elementary School Principal Colleen Vetere. “We’re really looking forward to it and we’re very appreciative of it.”
Vetere said sometimes it is difficult for parents to sometimes fill all the school supply needs of their children. She also said that teachers often buy school supplies out-of-pocket since they have a limited school supply budget.
“The cost of office and school supplies has increased dramatically, so they are really helping us out,” she said.
Rosman said for an event in Lake Placid, a group of fans goes to meet with residents at a nursing home for coffee or Bingo, and have collected books to donate to local libraries. He said the suggestion to collect school supplies came from the band’s manager at last year’s moe.down.
“There’s a common interest in the music and we’re taking it a step further and giving back to the local community,” he said.
Collection bins, supplied by Saranac Brewery, will be set-up at the festival’s Kid’s Tent, which will have a New York City theme this year. The theme is inspired by a moe. song with the same name.
