The creek that flows behind several homes on Ronald Street in the village of Herkimer will no longer be carrying away their back yards, thanks to a recently completed project to shore up the creek bank.
The village of Herkimer made use of Federal Emergency Management Agency funding to pay for the $30,000 project and hired Jim Werczynski Excavating, of Herkimer, to do the work.
In addition to the erosion problem, the creek had caused flooding on streets in the area during the past few years as a result of storms and heavy rainfall, according to Village Clerk Amanda Viscomi.
She said flooding at times had affected area streets all the way down to German Street.
Viscomi added runoff from further up the hill due to drainage issues has added to the heavy flow of water running into the creek during storms.
The project was designed to correct the flow of water in the creek as well as to protect residents’ property, Viscomi said.
