A 28-year-old man known locally as “Harry Potter” was arrested Thursday and charged with raping a 13-year-old girl, Ilion police said.
Jeremy Michael Snyder, of South Washington Street, Herkimer, was arrested on an Ilion Village Court warrant and charged with felony first-degree rape, Ilion police Investigator Paul Rose said. He was arraigned and committed to county jail in lieu of $25,000 cash bail, or $50,000 bail bond.
Snyder is a registered level-two sex offender, which the Division of Criminal Justice Services Web site describes as a medium risk.
Ilion police said Snyder is also known as Harry Potter, referencing the J.K. Rowling character.
The Herkimer County Child Advocacy Center, county Department of Social Services and Ilion police Captain Laurie DeVaul conducted the investigation that led to the arrest, Rose said.
