The village of Mohawk is preparing to expand its tax base after completion of a recent land survey.
Pending legal contracts and approval through the office of the Secretary of State of New York, the Mohawk trustees will be approving a new boundary, according to Denny Mowers surveyor.
A total of 17 acres of land, which includes portions of several taxable parcels, is being annexed from the town of German Flatts.
The land had actually been annexed at various times throughout the 1900s and left off of more recent village maps, Mowers explained.
Exactly what taxes should have been paid, or will be paid, is still unclear however.
Portions of four taxable parcels at the end of Warren Road will be annexed due to a 1913 agreement. And several segments of taxable parcels at the end of Hill View Drive will be within the village on account of a 1950 annexation.
Town of German Flatts Assessor Susan Meeker said she was unable to provide any dollar amounts on the parcels. The actual tax lots are yet to be determined, she explained.
A section at the end of Burns Avenue, which has no structures, will also be added as a result of a 1941 agreement.
Additional negotiations are ongoing with regard to an exchange of several small parcels along the barge canal between the villages of Mohawk and Herkimer.
Changes to the Mohawk River and Erie Canal made in 1922 created confusion over the original incorporated village layout of 1844 and sections of the unoccupied land will be annexed by both municipalities as a result, Mowers said.
