Demolition began, and ended on Thursday at the future site of the Mohawk Self Storage Company, near the NBT Bank on East Albany Street in Herkimer. Don Foor, owner of Mohawk Self Storage, spent the past two years hammering out the deal to secure the privately owned land, and now the building project is formally underway. There will be four buildings on the site, offering approximately 100 self storage units. Foor sought to build on this site as the storage units at his primary location at 10 New York Street in Mohawk is full to capacity. Mohawk Enterprises One LLC, who specializes in the construct of storage building systems, will be heading up the construction of the new storage facility. They anticipate the first building will be in place by September of this year.
Bulinski Trucking, Excavating and Masonry handled the demolition of the old house, which has stood empty for the past five to six years. Work got underway around 4:30 p.m. on Thursday afternoon, and the building was completely demolished in under an hour. On Friday they are expecting to have trucks in there to haul away the mounds of debris from the fallen house, clearing the site in preparation for the new construction work.
