Ilion, N.Y. —
A state Department of Transportation official said a construction project currently under way in the village of Ilion aims to improve roads and address safety issues for vehicles and pedestrians.
“The project is to address poor pavement conditions, a deficient signal system and safety issues related to vehicle and pedestrian conflict,” said Jim Piccola, DOT public information officer for Region 2, on Wednesday during a telephone interview. “It will also address maintenance repairs to a culvert.”
Piccola said the construction starts at First Street, on Otsego Street, and ends about a mile away at the village line, by Old Forge Road. Piccola said the work will restore the pavement through “mill and fill” — or when the existing pavement is milled down and then workers lay down an inch of new black top.
“There’s a lot of curb and sidewalk work being done,” said Piccola. “Also, some driveway aprons are being replaced.”
The span of the $900,000 project includes drainage work and the replacement of a new signal at the intersection of Route 51 (Otsego Street) with Weber and West streets.
“There’s a lot of safety deficiencies,” said Piccola about the sidewalk and curb work. “Pedestrian safety accommodations are going to be improved during the project.”
Piccola said while it is a DOT project, he said “we always work in concert with the village officials.”
Piccola said the major work is expected to be completed by Oct. 31, which is the end of the construction season. He said there may be some plantings of trees and shrubbery in the springtime.
