A rabid raccoon was found in the city of Little Falls during the past week, according to Herkimer County Public Health.
The raccoon found in the city was sent to Wadsworth Laboratory and was confirmed to be infected with the rabies virus.
Public health reminds county residents they should consider all wild animals to be potentially rabid. Exposure to the rabies virus can be lethal to people, pets and domesticated animals. Pets and domesticated animals should be inoculated and kept up-to-date with their vaccinations to prevent infection.
Herkimer County Public Health will resume rabies clinics in the spring. For more information about rabies, visit the Center for Disease Control’s website at www.cdc.gov/rabies.
Anyone who has questions is asked to contact Public Health at 867-1176.
