The Old Forge Arts Center has received a grant of $100,000 from The Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties. The award was announced in early December.
“The Foundation is truly honored to be a partner with the good people behind this important community treasure,” said Community Foundation President Peggy O’Shea.
The grant will support the hiring of performing arts and special events managers and will facilitate the development of those areas for the new center. Individuals, businesses and organizations will be welcome to use the new arts center for conferences and special events.
Jennifer Potter Hayes, executive director, said, “We are very gratified that The Community Foundation has made this grant. It could not have come at a better time, since we will take possession of the new building before the end of the year. Searches for the two new positions are under way and both have attracted a strong applicant pool. In addition to developing their respective programs, the new staff members will help plan events for our grand opening season in 2011.”
The new Old Forge Arts Center is scheduled for official dedication and a gala opening on July 8, 9 and 10, 2011. The new building features a state-of-the-art performance hall for music, theater and dance. There is space for meetings and events ranging from a small group of people to a 200-person wedding reception. The new building also has a catering kitchen. Gallery and workshop spaces have been expanded in the new facility to allow more programming, year-round throughout the building.
“We are in the midst of a dramatic and exciting transformation at the arts center,” Potter Hayes said. “We are working on several major initiatives simultaneously. We have been working hard to complete our new building, and raise the funds necessary to complete the financing and eliminate any debt as quickly as possible. We are continuing our nationally recognized exhibitions and expanding our workshops and classes for year-round residents of the greater Old Forge community, for artists across the country who enter our juried shows and participate in our fine arts workshops, as well as the many thousands of summer residents and visitors.”
The Old Forge Arts Center has raised more than $7 million for the new facility so far, according to Potter Hayes. The center’s new campaign, “Moving Mountains,” will raise funds to complete the financing of the building, to secure transformation funds — like The Community Foundation grant — to support the growth and changes in programs and operations, and to begin to build an endowment.
“Support has come largely from individuals, with donors giving what they can afford,” said Potter Hayes. “Most gifts to date have been under $1,000, but several commitments have exceeded $100,000, to more than $1 million.”
According to Potter Hayes, The Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties has made grants in the past six years to the arts center for its new building and programming totaling to date $416,000. The main gallery in the new arts center will be named for The Community Foundation in recognition of the foundation’s generous support, she said.
Exhibitions, workshops, theater productions, concerts and other programs are scheduled throughout this winter at the new arts center. The public is encouraged to stop by for a tour anytime after Jan. 10, 2011. A full schedule is available at www.artscenteroldforge.org.
