Thomas J. McLaughlin, 81, of 11 Miles Ave., Ilion, NY, passed away Tuesday, July 27, 2010, at the Little Falls Hospital.
He was born January 26, 1929, in Herkimer, NY, the son of the late Fred and Anna (Lally) McLaughlin, and received his elementary education at St. Francis De Sales School in Herkimer, graduated from Herkimer High School and attended Niagara University in Buffalo. Tom was career military, serving as a corpsman with the US Navy during WW II, Korea and Vietnam. On June 30, 1960, he married the former Margaret Lytle in Toledo, Ohio. After returning from his military service, Tom was employed as a Fire Insurance Rating Agent and as security at Herkimer County Community College, retiring several years ago.
Mr. McLaughlin was a member of the Church of the Annunciation in Ilion and the Knights of Columbus, Herkimer Council 579, as a Third Degree Knight.
Tom is survived by his wife, Margaret, of Ilion, and a brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Alice Lytle, of Toledo, Ohio. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, July 30, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of the Annunciation in Ilion, with Fr. Leo Potvin officiating, assisted by Deacon James Bower. Interment, with Military Honors, will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Herkimer. Friends may call on Thursday (today), July 29, 2010, from 5:00-7:00 PM at the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home, Inc., 100 Otsego Street, Ilion.
Tom’s family would like to thank the staff of Little Falls Hospital for all the care and compassion shown Tom during his illness.
Friends are asked to consider memorials to the Ilion Ambulance in Tom’s memory. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
