Verna Woroby, 84, of Route 5S, Mohawk, passed away peacefully, after a brief illness, on July 20, 2010, at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Utica. Verna had the comfort of her loving family at her side at the time of her passing.
Verna was born in Little Falls on November 1, 1925, daughter of the late Liz and Francis (Judy) McCaffery. She attended and graduated from St. Mary’s Academy, Little Falls. After graduation, Verna began a career with the New York Telephone Company. Verna was united in marriage to Peter Woroby on October 6, 1951, in St. Mary’s Church, Little Falls. They shared a devoted and loving union of 41 years until Peter’s passing on July 15, 1992.
After retiring as a telephone operator, Verna spent many years helping at the family-owned business, Judy’s Country Tavern, Jacksonsburg. She and her husband, Peter, spent many hours tirelessly preparing meals for their famous annual clambakes and St. Patrick’s Day dinners.
When most people would begin to consider retirement, Verna then began a 27-year career as a team leader with Weight Watchers International. She was most proud of her personal success with the program and was known for her creative and inspirational classes.
Verna is survived by her children, Cynthia and Michael Mackesey, of Clifton Park, Kathleen and Dean Doxtader, of Little Falls, Sherry and Mike Ramsey, of Mohawk, Mark and Elaine Woroby, of Loudonville, and Janice and Steve Scheutzow, of Fairport; her six grandchildren, Casey Mackesey, Katrina and Elaine Doxtader, and Amanda, Peter and Jack Scheutzow; and her two grand-dogs, Amber and Jasper. She also leaves her in-laws, Ola Gudzy, Ann Murphy and Ed Woroby, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Verna was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Peter; and her brother, Francis (Chuck) McCaffery.
Faith and family were Verna’s most precious values. Verna enjoyed volunteering at Blessed Sacrament Church, Mohawk, and its Rosary Society. She spent many years organizing her genealogy project. She enjoyed an occasional bridge game, summers at the Cape, bus trips with friends and especially her trip to Ireland to celebrate her Irish heritage.
Memorial contributions may be sent to Blessed Sacrament Church, 54 E. Main St., Mohawk, 13407. Donations may be made at the funeral home; envelopes will be available as well.
The family wishes to thank Drs. Dulkin, Davidson and Yoss and the caring and compassionate staff in the ICU of St. Elizabeth Hospital for the care and kindness shown to Verna during her illness.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Friday, July 23, 2010, from 5-8 p.m. at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 24 W. Monroe Street, Little Falls, 823-2424. Verna’s funeral will begin with prayer at the funeral home on Saturday, July 24, at 10 a.m. Her Mass of Christian Burial, celebrated by the Reverend Mark Cunningham, Sacramental Minister, will follow at 11 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Church, Mohawk. Procession will follow to St. Mary’s Cemetery, town of Herkimer, where she will be laid to rest next to her husband, Peter.
