Mr. Walter Sterzin, 96, formerly of E. German St. Ext., passed away Sunday, November 25, 2012, in Valley Health Services.
He was born in Manhattan on March 7, 1916, the son of the late Dimetro and Mary Lavick Sterzin, and he attended Salisbury Center Schools. Walter was married to Mary Kluka on August 31, 1940, in S.S. Peter & Paul Orthodox Church. Mary passed away on January 26, 2009, after 68 wonderful years of marriage. He was employed by Remington Rand, Ilion, and later as a Precision Grinder for Univac, Ilion and Utica Plants, until his retirement in 1978. He was a member of S.S. Peter and Paul Orthodox Church, serving on several church committees and serving as Vice President of the Church Council. Walter loved the outdoors and spent much of his time traveling with Mary, bowling, hunting, fishing, and playing and watching baseball.
Walter is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Robert Mueller, of Broomfield, CO; his daughter-in-law, Elaine Sterzin, of Lexington, MA; his grandchildren, David Mueller and his wife, Nicole, Kristin Mueller, Emily Sterzin Hughes and her husband, Tim Hughes, Alexander Sterzin and Linsey Bostwick; three great-grandsons, Christian Mueller, Nathan Mueller and Owen Hughes; his sister-in-law, Mildred Sviatyla, of Vestal, NY; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by three sons, David Sterzin, on July 30, 1968, Donald Sterzin on August 30, 1992, and Dennis Sterzin on December 26, 2011; one sister, Olga Cancelino, on June 24, 1957; and one brother, Michael Sterzin, on February 14, 2011.
His funeral will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 AM in S.S. Peter and Paul Orthodox Church, Main St., E. Herkimer, with V. Rev. John Udics officiating. Interment will be in S.S. Peter and Paul Orthodox Cemetery. Calling hours will be Saturday, December 1st, from 9-11 AM in S.S. Peter and Paul Orthodox Church.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Walter’s memory may be made to Valley Health Services - Activity Fund, 690 W. German St., Herkimer, NY 13350 or to S.S. Peter and Paul Orthodox Church, Main St., E. Herkimer, NY 13350 or to Herkimer County Meals on Wheels, 109 Mary St., Herkimer, NY 13350.
