Bartow H. Comstock, age 92, formerly of Herkimer and more recently Acacia Village in Utica, passed away peacefully on March 2, 2013, after a brief illness, in Mission Viejo, Calif.
He was born on May 2, 1920, in Gray, son of the late Howard and Blanche Comstock. He attended schools in Gray and Poland. He served in the Army during World War II in England, France and Belgium, attaining the rank of sergeant in the military police. At the end of the war, he returned to Birmingham, England, and married Joan Baxter on Aug. 18, 1945. They shared a blessed union of fifty-six years until her passing on April 1, 2002.
For forty-two years, Bart worked for the New York Telephone Company. He retired in 1982 as an engineer.
Bart was a member of the Utica Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite and the Ziyara Shriners in Utica. His involvement in the Shriners included volunteering his time driving children and their parents to the Shriners Children’s Hospital in Springfield, Mass., for appointments and consultations. He loved this volunteering opportunity.
Surviving him are two daughters, Gail Oakley and her husband, Richard, of Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., and Lynn Barnhart and her husband, Chris, of Seattle, Wash.; four grandchildren, Shauna Walchenbach, of Jackson, Wyo., Peter Walchenbach, of Seattle, Wash., Trevor Walchenbach, of Telluride, Colo., and Ava Barnhart, of Seattle, Wash.; two nieces and a nephew; and friend, Louise James. Besides his parents and wife, Bart was preceded in death by his sister, Elnora Maxfield.
Summer interment will take place at Fairview Cemetery in Gray at a time yet to be determined. Arrangements have been entrusted to the W.E. Autenrith Funeral Home in Newport.
