Richard "Al" A. Sanders, 81, of Frankfort, passed away Sunday, February 3, 2013, at his residence.

He was born on April 18, 1931, in E. Orange, New Jersey, the son of the late Richard Sanders and Iva Huntley, and was a graduate of New Hartford High School. In May of 1954, Al married the former Shirley Bunce in Cedar Lake, NY.

At the age of sixteen, in 1947, he packed a bag and headed cross country on his Indian motorcycle. Al's passion, other than his family, was racing stock cars. He was known in many of the racing circles as Al "Suicide" Sanders. He was self-employed and in demand as a specialist in port and polishing racing engine heads. The invaluable lessons on nature and the wonderful things in it will be remembered always by his grandchildren.

Al is survived by his loving wife of fifty eight years, Shirley; his son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Susan Sanders, of Ilion; his daughter, Laurie Sanders-Abbott, of Florida; his grandchildren, Daryl, Bridgette, Amy, Melissa and Stephanie; and his great-grandchildren, Dakota and Brielle.

In keeping with Al's wishes, there will be no public visitation or funeral services. His services will be held privately at the convenience of the family.

Online condolences may be given by visiting www.applegateandday.com.

The family has entrusted Al's arrangements and care to the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Road, Ilion, Town of Frankfort.
