Mr. Virgil Richard Gibbs, 89, of Tarboro, North Carolina, formerly of Herkimer, New York, passed away Friday, January 4, 2013.

Virgil was born October 2, 1923, in Sacramento, California. He attended school in California before joining the Navy in 1943, serving as a Seabee in Saipan and Okinawa until 1946. After his discharge, he returned to Japan as a civilian in Yokohama Harbor. While in Japan, he met Olive Caroline Brown from Herkimer, New York, who was teaching at Ashiya Air Base. They were married on the base in 1949, then moved to Herkimer, and began a loving union that lasted 59 years until Olive's passing in 2009.

He was employed at Chicago Pneumatic, as a contractor, while attending MVCC. He worked at Sperry Rand, Univac Corp. and MDS until his retirement in 1984. While in Herkimer, Virgil was active in the First United Methodist Church, Boy Scouts and the Masonic Lodge, serving as Master from 1969-1970.

In retirement, Virgil and Olive moved to Florida. Virgil enjoyed lawn bowling and jewelry club (where he became a lapidary creating many beautiful pieces of jewelry). Virgil also became a Licensed Amateur Radio operator, helping the National Weather Service. He worked with genealogy, researching his family history, and wrote "Footprints, My Life History", and wrote for the local paper.

Virgil and Olive traveled to Prague, Vienna, Budapest, China, Scotland and cruised the Mediterranean Sea. They enjoyed life in Florida. They moved to Tarboro, North Carolina, in 2007 to be near their daughter, Nancy. While there, Virgil continued his interests.

Virgil was a very caring and loving man, always doing for others, especially his family.

He is survived by one son, Richard Gibbs and wife, Martha; two daughters, Carol and husband, John Longwell, and Nancy and husband, Richard Worsinger; also grandchildren, Michael Gibbs and friend, Chris, Michelle Gibbs, Charles (Tonia) Longwell, Sherri (Joe) Pearson, and Christopher and Elizabeth Worsinger; eleven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Also surviving are his brother, James Gibbs, and sister, Ruth Cartee. Virgil was predeceased by his parents, Vergil and Esther Gibbs; four brothers and three sisters; and his beloved dog, "Cinderella of the Valley".

Burial will be at the Cedar Lake Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
