Herkimer, N.Y. —
Mr. Norbert G. Sands, 76, of 332 N. Washington St., passed away Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, in his home.
He was born in Herkimer on May 7, 1936, and he attended Herkimer schools, graduating from Herkimer High School with the class of 1955. He served with the U.S. Air Force and was honorably discharged on July 9, 1959. He later served with the New York State National Guard and was honorably discharged on March 25, 1980, with the rank of staff sergeant. He was married to Ruth Hathaway on Aug. 21, 1961, in Oneonta. Norbert started off as a meat cutter and later the dairy manager for Great American in Herkimer and Ilion for many years, and he was a communicant of Saints Anthony and Joseph Church.
Norbert is survived by his loving wife, Ruth Sands. He was predeceased by his beloved son, Christian Harold Sands, on Aug. 27, 1989, and his mother, Stella Siankiewicz.
His funeral was held privately from the Petykiewicz, Iocovozzi & Burns Funeral Home, 329 S. Washington St., Herkimer, with the Rev. Thomas Lawless officiating. Spring interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.
