Graveside services for Rose Popka Sokol, age 93, of Thatcher, Ariz., will be conducted Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012, at the Safford Cemetery by Pastor Kris Keyes. She will be laid to rest next to her late husband, John A. Sokol, Sr.
Rose passed away peacefully Jan. 16, 2012, at her residence, with the comfort of her son, James, at her side at the time of her passing.
Rose was born in Bayonne, NJ, on June 4, 1918, the daughter of the late Mary Dombrowska Popka and John Louis Popka of Herkimer.
Rose attended Stuben Hill School in Herkimer and she helped her parents, John and Mary Popka, operate a dairy farm on Stuben Hill, Herkimer. On Jan. 9, 1937, she was united in marriage to John Andrew Sokol, Sr. The couple operated a dairy farm on the Snells Bush Road, Little Falls, until 1978 and, after retiring from their farm, they moved back and forth between Ormond Beach, Fla., and Thatcher, Ariz. Together, Rose and John shared a devoted and loving union of sixty-six years until John’s passing on Sept. 17, 2003.
Rose is survived by her two sons, John Sokol, Jr. (Phyllis), of Alpine, Ariz., and James Sokol, of Thatcher, Ariz.; a sister, Helen Witkowski, of Ormond Beach, Fla.; a brother, John Popka, Jr. (Pat), of Herkimer; two grandchildren, Neil Sokol (Chris), of Valencia, California, and Andrea Martinez (Blas), of Lancaster, Calif.; five great-grandchildren, Andrew, Jonathan and Adam Wesley Sokol, Mario Alvarez and Athena Avalos; two great-great-grandchildren, Destiny Rose and Richard Avalos; and numerous nieces and nephews. Rose was predeceased by her husband, John A. Sokol, Sr., and two sisters, Anna Woytowich, of Richfield Springs, and Sophia Sokol, of Little Falls.
