Margaret W. "Peg" Mooney, 83, of Herkimer, passed away on September 29, 2012, after a long illness.

Mrs. Mooney was born on November 11, 1928, in Newport, a daughter of the late Harold and Arlene (McNally) Welsh. She graduated from West Canada Valley Central School in 1945 and received an Associate's degree from the Delhi State University. On November 25, 1954, Margaret was united in marriage with Cletus J. Mooney at St. John's Church, Newport. She held various jobs in New York, Connecticut and last in New Jersey, where she retired as a bookkeeper at a local newspaper. Cletus preceded her in death on April 11, 1988. Margaret moved to Herkimer in 1989. Mrs. Mooney was a member of the Kuyahoora Senior Citizens and St. John's Church.

Peg loved travelling, especially her trips to Ireland with Cletus. She later enjoyed bus trips and visiting with her many friends. She was an avid Yankees fan and loved doing crossword puzzles. Her family will miss her quick wit, humor and knowledge of local history.

Survivors include a brother, John "Jack" Welsh, of Newport; four neices and nephews, Michael Welsh, of Interlaken, Ellen (Randy) Barnes, of West Palm, FL, Rosemary Welsh, of Hartwick and John (Jennifer) Welsh, of Amherst; four great-nephews, Nicholas (Kristen) Barnes and Christopher Barnes, of Tampa, FL, and Jonathan and Daniel Welsh, of Amherst; and a great-great-niece, Sophie Ann Barnes. In addition to her husband, Cletus, she was predeceased by a sister-in-law, Ann Welsh; and a niece, Kathleen Welsh.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John's Church, Newport on Friday at 9:00 a.m. with Father William A. Gorman, Pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in St. John's Cemetery, Newport. Calling hours at the Autenrith Funeral Home, 7479 Main Street, Newport will be held on Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m.

The family is especially grateful to her caregiver and special friend, Carla Pogonowski.

In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John's restoration fund. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
