Richard L. “Dick” Ludwig, 80, of 68 Columbia St., passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013, at Bassett Health Care in Cooperstown.
Dick was born on Jan. 16, 1933, in Rome, the son of the late Martin and Pauline (Smith) Ludwig; he was a graduate of Mohawk schools and attended Oneonta State University. Dick worked for 27 years as a serial number control coordinator at Remington Arms before retiring in 1992. Dick also served as village of Mohawk policeman for 14 years and later as village justice for 35 years.
Dick served in the U.S. Air Force, reaching the rank of staff sergeant. While Dick was attending Oneonta State College, he met and married Doris (Wise) Ludwig on Feb. 6, 1954, in Albany, a marriage lasting 59 years.
He was an active member of the Mohawk Reformed Church, serving on the consistory. Dick was also the past commander of the Mohawk American Legion and its drill team, past leader of Boy Scout Troop No. 26 and commissioner of the General Herkimer Council of the Boy Scouts, member of the New York State and Herkimer County Magistrates’ Association and the Sampson Air Force Base Veterans’ Association. In his spare time, Dick loved camping, traveling and taking cruises, stamp collecting, SU basketball and an occasional trip to the casino, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family.
Dick is survived by his wife, Doris; a daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Frank Roe, of Mohawk; a sister-in-law, Lynn Pelish, of Connecticut; his grandchildren, Keith Martin and his partner, Don Phillips, Frank Roe, Jr., and his fiancee, Amanda Millington, Francis Roe and his girlfriend, Jocelyn Bellinger, Joshua Ludwig, Cameron Ludwig and wife, Leila, and Shannon Ludwig; three great-grandchildren, Eowyn and Marc Ludwig and Corbin Roe; several nieces and cousins; and also his canine friends, Tyler and Bella. Dick was predeceased by his son, Richard T. “Rick” Ludwig.
Friends are invited to attend a memorial service for Dick to be held on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, at 3 p.m. at the Mohawk Reformed Church with Pastor Brian Engel officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at the church.
In lieu of floral offerings, friends are asked to consider memorials to the Mohawk Reformed Church or the American Heart Association in Dick’s memory. Envelopes will be available at the church or the funeral home.
The family would like to thank the Bassett ICU and SCU, as well as Pastor Brian Engel and the church family, for all the support given to Dick and his family.
